Outlander Tour Cost: What You Actually Get for the Money

Every Outlander tour promises Lallybroch and Castle Leoch. Not all of them deliver. A proper filming-locations day starts from about $80, but the price tells you little on its own: what really separates these tours is how many of the show's actual locations they reach. The best itinerary isn't the dearest, past a point the extra money buys a smaller minibus rather than more Outlander, and the Inverness tours reach no filming locations at all.

Not All “Outlander Locations” Are Equal

Tour listings count locations, and counting rewards padding. A tour advertising eight stops can be weaker than one advertising four, because a standing stone circle the show never filmed at is not the same thing as the courtyard at Lallybroch. Before comparing prices, it's worth separating what these tours actually visit into three groups.

The five locations fans travel for

Midhope Castle (Lallybroch, Jamie's family home), Doune Castle (Castle Leoch), Blackness Castle (Black Jack Randall's Fort William), Culross (Cranesmuir, and Claire's herb garden), and Falkland (1945 Inverness, including the fountain Claire gazes into). If a tour misses most of these, it isn't really an Outlander tour whatever the title says.

Worthwhile extras, if the price is right

Linlithgow Palace stands in for Wentworth Prison. Dysart Harbour is the Port of Le Havre from series two, and appears on only one tour here. The Highland Folk Museum at Newtonmore is the 18th-century township, and only the 2-day tour reaches it.

Real history, not filming locations

Culloden Battlefield and Clava Cairns are the genuine article — the 1746 battle the story turns on, and the Bronze Age circle widely credited as the inspiration for Craigh na Dun. Neither appears in the series as itself. They're the heart of the Inverness tours and a poor substitute if what you want is to stand where the show was shot.

Judged that way, one tour on this list falls out of the category immediately. The Glasgow departure at from $66.12 is a Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond and Kelpies day out that happens to stop at Midhope — one filming location out of five. It's a perfectly good general Scotland tour at 4.7★ from 54 reviews, and if that's the day you want, it's cheap. It just isn't the cheapest Outlander tour, and it shouldn't be compared against tours that are.

The Day Tours, by What They Actually Reach

Here are the single-day tours, ranked by cost per major filming location rather than by headline price — and then again once you add the castle admissions each one leaves out. The villages of Culross and Falkland are free to walk around, so only the castles carry a fee.

The finding that surprised us

Rabbie's runs the same tour concept from two cities, and the Glasgow departure is both cheaper and substantially better. From $109.31 it reaches five major filming locations; the Edinburgh version, from $122.80, reaches three. Same operator, same two included admissions, same small Mercedes mini-coach, same free cancellation. You pay $13.49 more from Edinburgh for two fewer locations. Unless you genuinely can't get to Glasgow — and the two cities are 50 minutes apart by train — there's no case for the Edinburgh version, and we'd take the earlier train.

Check the Midhope small print before you book the cheap one

The Gray Line tour from Edinburgh, from $79.62, lists Lallybroch in its highlights and Midhope Castle in its exclusions, noting limited winter opening days and hours. Read together, that means the stop isn't guaranteed. If Lallybroch is the reason you're booking — and for a lot of fans it is the whole trip — that uncertainty is worth the $29.69 step up to the Outlander Adventure Tour from Glasgow, where Midhope sits in the itinerary proper. This is the single most common way people end up disappointed on a budget Outlander tour.

The Inverness Tours Sell Something Different

The tours departing Inverness under the Outlander banner share a quirk: none of them visits a filming location. What they visit is the history: Culloden Battlefield, where the 1746 Jacobite defeat that shapes the whole story actually happened, and Clava Cairns, the 4,000-year-old burial complex generally credited with inspiring Craigh na Dun. The series filmed neither. That's not a criticism — for a lot of readers this is the more moving day out, and the moor at Culloden is genuinely affecting in a way a castle car park is not. It's simply a different purchase, and worth knowing before you book.

The middle option is where we'd spend here. Culloden and Clava Cairns are the reason to come, and the distillery stop gives the day a second dimension for $40.76. The 5-hour tour at the top of the range is the sharpest drop-off on the page — nearly double the price for a day that's four hours shorter, on a review base of 17.

Going Private, and Going Longer

A couple of options sit outside the day-tour market, and they're bought for different reasons.

The Outlander Experience 2-Day Tour from Edinburgh, from $310.38 per person, is the only multi-day option here and the only tour that reaches the Highland Folk Museum — the 18th-century township used for the series' village scenes. It includes Doune Castle entry, a hotel night with breakfast, and Midhope subject to availability, then adds Culloden, Clava Cairns and Loch Ness on day two. At 4.8★ from 172 reviews it's well evidenced. For a fan who wants both the filming locations and the history without choosing, it's the tidiest answer on this page.

The Private Outlander Location Tour from Edinburgh, from $701.73 per group, is priced per booking rather than per person — and that changes the maths completely depending on how many of you there are:

So the crossover is around six. Below that you're buying hotel pickup, a car instead of a coach, and an itinerary you can rearrange on the day — all real things, none of them more Outlander. Note too that this tour excludes admission to Blackness, Midhope and Falkland Palace, so those costs land on top for every person in the car. One further private option leaves Edinburgh: Outlander Odyssey, from $539.79, with a flexible itinerary, hotel pickup and WiFi on board. Go in with your eyes open on this one: it's rated 3.6★ from just 3 reviews, the weakest evidence base of any tour on this page, and its listing doesn't make clear whether that price is per person or per group. Confirm the pricing basis with the operator before you book, and treat the rating as genuinely unproven rather than merely new.

So, Are the Expensive Tours Better for Fans?

Mostly, no — and this is the clearest thing to come out of comparing them side by side. The strongest filming-location itinerary on GetYourGuide costs from $109.31, sits squarely in the middle of the price range, and is beaten on locations by nothing above it. Everything dearer than about $110 a head is selling one of three things: a smaller group, a private vehicle with hotel pickup, or extra days. Those are worth paying for if you want them. They are not more Outlander.

It's worth saying plainly what doesn't change with price, because the fear of missing out is what drives most overspending here. Doune Castle is Castle Leoch on every tour that stops there. The archway at Midhope is the same archway whether you arrived in a 50-seat coach or a private Mercedes. Culross and Falkland are public villages — you walk the same streets for free either way. Nearly every tour on this page offers free cancellation and reserve-now-pay-later. What actually changes as the price climbs is how many people you share the day with, whether someone has already bought your castle tickets, and how much say you have over the route.

Both of those are delivered by tours in the $80–$110 range, and the money above that buys privacy and comfort rather than access. Who should: groups of six or more, where private stops being an indulgence; fans who want Dysart Harbour or the Highland Folk Museum, which only appear at the top of the range; and anyone who'd rather not gamble on a winter Midhope opening.
